Found a fossilised sea urchin… on top of a hill Found a fossilised sea urchin… on top of a hill in Dorset, while metal detecting!
Crazy to think this hill was once under the sea — and this urchin could be over 100 million years old. Sea urchin fossils, or echinoids, were once believed to bring good luck and even protect homes from lightning if placed in a doorway. Might have to start carrying this one around! ⚡🍀 #metaldetecting #dorset #fossilfind #echinoid #luckyfind #detectorist #fossilhunting #ancientsea #jurassiccoast #metaldetectinguk
Spent a few hours detecting at an old flax mill si Spent a few hours detecting at an old flax mill site and found some Russian lead bale seals—once used to certify the quality of imported flax. This site was home to the country’s first flax swingling mill, built in 1803, where machinery helped separate tough outer layers from the valuable inner fibres. The flax was then combed and spun into yarn, ready to be twisted into rope. Amazing to find objects that directly connect to this global trade and local heritage. #MetalDetecting #HistoryUnderfoot #LeadSeals #RopeMaking #Dorset #HiddenHistory #HistoricalFinds #heritagehunting #metaldetectinguk #nokta #metaldetectingfinds #russianhistory

Hammered silver Groat of Queen Elizabeth I with a Hammered silver Groat of Queen Elizabeth I with a Martlet mint mark, struck in 1560 or 1561 at the Tower Mint in London. The Martlet is a mythological bird that never roosts. The obverse shows a crowned bust of Elizabeth I, facing left, from her second issue coinage, while the reverse displays the fourchee long cross, quartering a shield of arms.

You've got to love a jetton! I believe this one is You've got to love a jetton! I believe this one is a Nuremberg jetton copying the design of the French Dauphine jettons, dating to c. AD 1480-1490.
Here’s an example of how they worked: Counting Board Setup: Jettons placed on a board with columns for units, tens, hundreds, etc.
Transactions:
📦 Bought wool for 50 pence (5 jettons in tens column).
🧵 Sold cloth for 120 pence (1 jetton in hundreds, 2 in tens).
🍺 Bought ale for 30 pence (3 jettons in tens).
🛒 Sold other goods for 200 pence (2 jettons in hundreds).
Calculations: Move jettons to add up earnings and subtract costs.
Balancing:
Earnings: 320 pence.
Expenditures: 80 pence.
Net Profit: 240 pence.
Jettons made accounting simple and visual. 📊🔢 #metaldetectinguk #metaldetectingfinds #Jettons #Merchants #MedievalLife

Research on the Staple Inn buildings came back with this:
Staple Inn dates from 1585. The building was once the wool staple, where wool was weighed and taxed. It survived the Great Fire of London, was extensively damaged a Nazi German Luftwaffe aerial bomb in 1944 but was subsequently restored. It has a distinctive timber-framed façade, cruck roof and an internal courtyard. Always amazes me when you can attach real history and places to such small items 🕵️
